A New Year calls for a new way of looking and seeing. Nothing helps one sharpen their visual acuity like painting. In this five-session class over 6 weeks, we will look to our female painting ancestors as well as some powerhouse contemporary artists for inspiration. Whether you are a beginner or practicing artist, this class is geared to stimulate your creativity while discovering new techniques and artists. Working from representation to abstraction, we will look at four uncompromising artists: Artemisia Gentileschi, Francois Gilot, Berthe Morisot and contemporary art star Flora Yuknovich. Crossing all genres of painting, figurative, landscape, still life and abstraction, our weekly painting assignments will keep us focused on new ways of seeing and painting. The class is part art history, part painting for a fully immersive way of learning how to paint, engaging with the work and discovering new ways of looking at the world. Lecture and demos begin in class as well as weekly reviews of the painted assignments. Projects require some painting time outside class. Painting assignments are suggested on gessoed paper which is available for purchase from the instructor. $ 30. Material fee due to instructor at first class meeting.
